Summary

Steven R. Snyder first became interested in sculpture and stone carving when he entered the stone masonry business in 1976. A self-taught artist, he began sculpting in 1981, propelled by his admiration for Pennsylvania stone architecture and the diversity of indigenous stone in Bucks County. To Snyder, stone is an ideal medium to work with because of its surface texture and the way its appearance changes in different lights.

In addition to local stone, Snyder uses both natural and found objects. Most of his work is appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use, such as his bird baths and fountains. Other works are site-specific, ranging from patios, walkways, and walls to stone fireplaces and outdoor showers. Snyder also fulfills requests for datestones, headstone-like slabs of stone engraved with a date and occasionally other information. Finally, Snyder does some restorative work, repairing old or neglected stone buildings.

Snyder draws inspiration from his experiences living, working, and raising a family in Bucks County. He has exhibited at Phillips' Mill in New Hope and was a featured artist at the Nantucket Garden Festival in Massachusetts in 2010. Snyder's work has been highlighted in various publications, including Fine Homebuilding Magazine in 1994 and Country Living Magazine in 1996.
