"As books need the reader, and music an audience, so do paintings rely on the viewer to perceive and participate in the work, conveying the visual truths of our world to one another."
-Glenn F. Harrington

Glenn Harrington's paintings have appeared in museums and galleries across the nation. His work has also been featured in traveling exhibitions to Japan as well as private collections throughout the country. He works primarily in oils on linen portraying the people and landscape of Bucks County and the places he has visited.

Harrington is influenced by the major painters working in the classical, romantic, and realist traditions, yet he pulls from modern disciplines in painting, literature, and photography. He seeks to present contemporary pictures influenced by tradition: pictures with suggested narratives of people, inextricably interwoven with their places, bathed in the mood of their moment. Harrington feels that nature, at times, can be the narrator, driving the force behind a picture. In others, sitters and subjects are free to reveal their stories of how their environment affects them.

In his artist statement, he quotes Henri Matisse as saying, "I cannot copy nature in a servile way, but must interpret it and submit it to the spirit of the picture." Harrington goes on to say that the "spirit of the picture" is paramount. It sets the mood and voice for the viewer. Yet, in order to understand what we are looking at, we must spend time observing and understanding. Ultimately, it is a timeless, transcendent, quality that Harrington is after, honest about our day, yet offering something unique about our time.

Harrington is represented in the Ranulph Bye retrospective, A Sense of Place, with his portrait of Ranulph Bye, at the Michener Art Museum (2014-2015). Harrington also has two portraits of Bucks County Judges in the Michener Art Museum exhibition, A Judicial Legacy: Portraits from the Bucks County Court Collection (2015).
