Desmond McRory was born in Levittown, Pennsylvania and learned painting mainly through self-study, which included visits to museums in the United States and Europe. He began painting in the 1980s, working from books on Tonalist and Impressionist images. McRory's artistic style is influenced by the work of many prominent Bucks County Impressionists who painted in the Tonalist style. Tonalist artists capture landscape forms with an overall tone of colored atmosphere or mist and an emphasis on shadow.
McRory's paintings have been exhibited at the Silverman Gallery and the the Bucks County Designer House and Gardens. In 2013, he was winner of the Artsbridge Award for Painting in the Bucks County Tradition.
