Anne Goodell Lathrop

Anne Goodell's work is reminiscent of Mary Cassatt's impressionistic style in terms of composition, light, and subject. Goodell studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now the Moore College of Art and Design), where she received an Elkins European Scholarship to study in Europe in 1924. When she returned she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts summer school at Chester Springs, where she studied with Daniel Garber and Joseph T. Pearson. Goodell kept a studio on Washington Square in Philadelphia and exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Club, the Sketch Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1930, Goodell married Julian Langson Lathrop, son of painter William L. Lathrop. They moved into the Cooper's Shop at the Lathrop's estate, Phillips' Mill. She stopped painting to raise her family, but returned to her artwork in the 1970s. Her painting had then become more impressionistic in style, and she exhibited locally at the Coryell Gallery and at Phillips' Mill. She died in 1996 at age 94.

Connection to Bucks County
Anne Goodell came to New Hope in 1930 when she married Julian L. Lathrop, son of painter William L. Lathrop and founder of the Solebury School. The couple moved into the Cooper's shop on the Lathrop family estate at Phillips Mill. As a painter she used the name Anne Goodell because she did not want to trade on the Lathrop name. Anne Goodell resided at Phillips' Mill until her death, at age 94, in 1996.

Colleagues and Affiliations
Anne Goodell Lathrop's sister, Margaret Goodell Claxton of Germantown, was also a painter. Goodell went to school with sculptor Harry Rosin and they were close friends. Painter Harry B. Snell and his wife Florence Snell, also a painter, came for Sunday dinner at the William Lathrops'. Anne Goodell Lathrop gave birth to two daughters; Nora Grimison, who graduated from the Moore College of Art and Design, and Jill Karhumaa, who attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where she met and later married sculptor Karl Karhumaa. Goodell exhibited with Cortland Butterfield, John Charry, Joe Crilley, Tom Galbraith, Karl Karhumaa, and Harry Rosin in a show called New Hope: Six Guys and A Gal in 1972. She exhibited at the Coryell Gallery in Lambertville and at the juried shows at Phillips' Mill Community Association. In her later years, painter Pat Martin and painter/poet Elaine Restifo kept her company on weekends. Martin also painted with her.
