"For one to pick up a pot and feel it, to use it, to enjoy both the visual beauty and the functional aspect only then is my work complete."
-Amedeo Salamoni
Amadeo Salamoni was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1965. He attended Kean University in Union, NJ, receiving a bachelor's degree in Urban and Outdoor Recreation in 1988 and a master's in Art Education in 1989.
Salamoni found his passion for ceramic sculpture while studying at Kean and went on to earned a MFA in Ceramics-Sculpture in 1991. After teaching himself the method of throwing clay, he became obsessed with making functional pots.
This passion took Salamoni to rural Georgia, where he took a job at a production pottery, working with local folk potters. After learning from master potters, he began the technique of wood-firing.
Since 1997 he has operated his studio in Lancaster County, PA. He uses Asian forms as an influence in his work and has recently been exploring abstract imagery, producing sculpture and paintings as well as pottery.
He is the author of the book Wood-Fired Ceramics: 100 Contemporary Artists, showcasing artists today that practice the process of wood-firing.
Salamoni is currently a ceramics teacher at George School in Newtown, Bucks County, PA. He believes clay is a very tactile medium, both in the creation process and in teaching. To fully understand the work, students must experience the nuances of color, nature, texture, weight, and the form in which they interact with each other, observing with the hand, the heart, and the soul.
