"I have created a special surface and process that I work on which allows me to create an extraordinary amount of translucency in my work."
-Al Lachman
Painter Al Lachman grew up in the Bronx, New York. He attended the Art Students League, the School of the Visual Arts, and Syracuse University. In addition to New York, Lachman has lived in the Poconos and Chicago.
Al Lachman is known in Bucks County for his colorful, evocative images of houses and other buildings. In the late 1980s, he was moved by the homeless people he met on the streets of New York and made a series of paintings and works on paper depicting some of these desperate lives. These powerful, deeply felt images show the humanity and pathos of the men and women who struggle to survive amidst the wealth and glamour of the city.
Al Lachman celebrated 50 years of painting in 2005. His paintings were included the 2005 Michener Art Museum exhibition titled The Contemporary Eye.

Connection to Bucks County
During his residence in the Poconos, Lachman had the opportunity to become acquainted with Bucks County. He and his wife were particularly enchanted by a stone mill on Cuttalossa Road near Lumberville, Bucks County. During a subsequent visit some twenty years later, the Lachmans discovered the mill was for sale. They purchased the mill and moved to Bucks County in 2000 and opened an art gallery in New Hope.
